As March is the month of connecting to our purpose, I recently wrote a post Why Do You Do what You Do? and in the following article, I wanted to explore how we connect to our purpose when we are loving, romantic, respectful husbands and wives.
Going out on dates, holidays, snuggling on the sofa together, laughing, teasing, seducing, pursuing, caring, comforting… how do we connect to our purpose during these ‘indulgences’ and ‘frivolities’?! Surely these sort of things aren’t worshiped, are they?
Yes, they are!
Here are some ways that you can connect to your purpose through all of the candle-lit dinners, perfume, chocolates, and flowers, or through dish-washing, laundry, weight gain, and the daily grind (!):
Be A Reflection
You can be a reflection of the meanings of Allah’s loving names, such as Al-Wadud, the Loving, and Ash-Shakur, The Giving.
Emulating The Messengers
You are emulating the messengers of Allah (upon them all be peace), who were modest, used perfume and the tooth-stick, and married.
Emulating The Messenger of Allah ﷺ
You will be emulating the best of creation ﷺ, who got married and was the best to his wives.
Be The Pride of The Messenger of Allah ﷺ
You will be the pride of Messenger of Allah ﷺ who will boast about you – oh, how I pray that he ﷺ is proud of us!
Be a Mercy
By being merciful, loving and respectful in your marriage, you can be Muhammadan ﷺ in deed and spirit. Through emulation of the perfect man ﷺ, you can strive to be a mercy to the worlds yourself.
Protect Your Chastity
You are protecting your chastity – we often forget this, but a big reason we are married is to make sexual fulfilment halal.
Stability & Harmony For The Entire Universe!
You are doing what is best for society. By cultivating love with your spouse, you are providing stability and harmony for your own lives, the lives of your children and extended family, your community, the whole of the universe! Think about that when you give your spouse a kiss…
Be The Best of People
By creating a loving marriage will make you of the best people, never underestimate your loving and respectful gestures, it will make you of the elite, inshaAllah.
A righteous spouse is a means of provision: may we bring out the best in our spouses so that they are righteous, and may we be righteous spouses!
Be a Garment of Protection, Safety and Security
You and your spouse can be a garment for each other, to protect and cover each other, providing safety and security for one another and in turn, for your children and extended families.
By creating a loving marriage, you are giving your spouse their rights through your time, care and affection.
Fulfilling Your Charges
You are fulfilling the rights of your charges – we are all guardians/shepherds of our flock and by creating a loving marriage you are doing your bit (or a lot!).
May Allah accept it from us!
